The Power of ACTION

Happy New year everybody!!!!

2005 is going to be a bumper year, I can feel it in the air!!!  This is going to be a year of action for all of us.  A year of kicking those goals and achieving what it is you want for yourself in your lives.  No more passivity permitted.  This is about The Power of ACTION, resulting in remarkable results.

This is about making a commitment to achievement, and no longer allowing yourself to wallow in passivity in any area of your life.  Passivity can come from an unconscious fear of failure - if I actually begin down a path, what if I'm not successful?  Or you may not be sure what it is you want, so you sit and wait for that lighting bolt to hit you. Action in some direction is more productive than doing nothing, knowing that it is OK to change your direction - this is very different to giving up or being passive.

Your beliefs too may not be in support of what it is you say you want - and this is an important place to start.  What beliefs do you have about yourself currently, and how you show up in the world?  hint: to work out, listen to what your peer group/family are saying in relation to you, as that is often a great and sometimes uncomfortable reflection of how you view or fear yourself to be at a deep level; or ask a trusted friend to play back some of your language that you use in relation to achieving certain things in your life.

If your beliefs are not in support of you being successful in your own eyes, in the area you want to be - work on consciously changing them (and please feel free to email me for some tips on how to change your beliefs).  Knowing that ultimately your results mirror how you feel about yourself and life, so it is about creating thoughts that consistently produce positive feelings for you.  Our lives reflect our beliefs!

With both your beliefs and the actions you choose, the most important ingredient is for them all to be in ALIGNMENT with what you say you want.  If you say you want to achieve a particular goal, do something a certain way, be a certain type of person, treat people a particular way - stay within integrity with how you say you want to show up, and take action that is in alignment to that, versus drifting or going back into what you know and say you no longer want.

We often do go back into behaviours/groups/life situations that we know well, even after suggesting we want to step away from that way of being. As it is easier for us to stay with, or fall back into what is our comfort zone - yet that particular zone is ultimately eroding our sense of self as it is not in alignment with where we have now stated we want to go!

Action is required in order for you to achieve what you say you want for yourself.  Things do come to you - however they wont by your sitting passively at home, or in your office doing nothing; or continuing to do the same thing you have always done.  Like attracts like - what you put out is what you will get back - so when you take action in alignment with what you want, believing that the outcome you desire is possible - you will achieve that in return.

It may require you to leave a friendship/relationship, smile at more people as you want to be open to new entrants into your life, change your career or find a new career, and any of these and more may seem very confronting things to do, however the choice is... do you stay with what you don't want, or do you take the risk and move towards your personal goals?

Taking action is about stepping up in life, versus cowering in its shadows.  There is always a space for you to lead - which is very different to jostling or pushing others out of the way to be in front: that is more about control vs. leadership.

A client told a story of how he recently stepped into a fight and stopped it, using some of the tools he has learnt.  The beauty of this story being that he felt incredibly good and proud of himself for having taken action.  His past behaviour was to stand in the wings, watch and wait.   We all feel good when we step up and take the lead in any area of our life.

So...what are your goals for 2005?  What actions need to be taken in alignment with your goals?

Determine your 1 year goals.

Then break down into 90 day achievements.

Define this month's goals (as part of a major goal, or something to be achieved in that month in its entirety).

Look at what action you need to take this week, and what you therefore need to be doing each day.

Most importantly...acknowledge your achievements daily - every action no matter how small or seeming inconsequential contributes to the bigger picture when it is aligned with it!

Key to the achievement of your goals is to identify and work with your unique style.  I am someone who requires a lot of space, flexibility and I shrivel under rigidity or restraint, so I allow myself leeway with how I achieve my goals i.e. if I have 40 calls to make in a week, instead of spreading them out systematically and evenly I might make them all in 2 days under the pressure of time, as I also thrive in being pressure prompted.  If you are more methodical, then honour that!

What I have learnt is that it is not about making yourself into this 'perfectly operating being' ; as one person's style may be the other person's torture.  It is more productive, and will assist more powerfully in achieving the results you desire, if you recognise your natural style, suspend judgment, accept it and then leverage it to your advantage - take action your way!

A powerful book I would recommend which talks to what can be achieved when you take action is '100 Great Businesses and the Minds Behind Them' (Emily Ross & Angus Holland).  What stands out is that there are so many different ways to achieve the end result. I hear the Frank Sinatra tune 'I Did it My Way' as I read it.

These entrepreneurs did it their way, they uniquely created their outcomes, creating their own rules along the way.  The link between the array of very different paths to riches, was that they all had the determination to succeed and they took action without ever letting passivity overwhelm them. And for some, their immediate goal was as simple as paying the rent, with their end result being a multi-billion dollar empire!

For my readers who may not yet be sure what direction they really want to step in - these stories contain shining examples of where individuals took action in some direction and allowed themselves the flexibility to modify and change how it may look, or what business it may evolve into, with the unwavering end goal of financial success.  The key being - taking action in alignment with what they wanted! It is OK for things to change their form and function, the 'how' it evolves - as life is not a static entity, change is the only certainty; as long as you always keep your sight on the end result - financial success, personal fulfilment, health, family, loving relationship.....

The other fundamental that supports taking action to lead to the results you want, is to ensure that you do not shrink yourself or play small.  Know that you are only as dynamic as the company you keep.  Look around you...are your peer's goals, aspirations and behaviours in alignment with how you want to live your life?  And most importantly what are they doing about it? Do they sit around talking about what they want to do; sit there and wait for the answer to come to them; or put the responsibility onto another for the answer or results?  Or are they going out there with a positive, 'nothing will stop me' attitude, grabbing the world by its ears?

Are your peer group reflective of where you want to be?  If not, change your circle of influence - surround yourself with like motivated, directional people.  Find role models and take action.  You are not a bad person or friend to step away from a situation that is not in alignment with where you want to go.  This is your life, your responsibility and playing small is ultimately not going to give you what you say you want.  In fact you are actually offering others the opportunity to step up if they so choose to, by your own example.

Finally, to get deep and meaningful with you about what may be getting in your way...often our current ways of behaviour can be a pattern from our family of origin.  We may have some unresolved issues with our parents (generally), siblings or significant adults growing up and as adults we can be replaying these patterns.  It may be a pattern based on beliefs fed into us that we are never going to amount to much and therefore we still seem to be continually coming under criticism from others for not measuring up.  That we are 'too much' and therefore should lessen ourselves somewhat. Or conversely it could be a pattern of overachievement - our achievements are more about how we look in other people's eyes rather than our own sense of fulfilment.

Whatever it may be if this is getting in your way of taking action in alignment with what your heart wants, know that YOU CAN break the pattern, any pattern (with professional help if need be), by becoming conscious to your obstacles and then consciously choosing new ways of operating that support what it is you say you want.

Recognise the behaviours you need to consciously change, adopt, or highlight; and then take action that is in alignment with how your new vision looks - without deviation!  Remembering that lip-service and words mean nothing - actions speak louder, and will lead to your results, not your words!

May you all be significantly motivated to instill The Power of ACTION and make 2005 the year to beat all years for you.
